T: 0044 (0) 20 3976 2452

Sophie has worked with a wide range of public and private sector clients, including national governments and the World Bank, on areas such as investment promotion, economic development, restructuring, acquisitions, and co-financing. Emerging markets and post-conflict economies are special interests.

Much of Sophie’s career has been spent in the former USSR. Sophie advised the Government of Kyrgyzstan on the creation of a national investment promotion agency (IPA), and on visa reform; she worked with Moscow City Government to promote the city’s tech and MICE sectors; and has extensive experience in Georgia and Uzbekistan, working with government departments on tourism and investment. Sophie is also a consultant to the World Bank, advising on their technical assistance programmes in Tajikistan, and on cross-border trade between Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Sophie’s experience extends beyond Eurasia into the Middle East and Africa. She has planned promotion events in the UAE and Sudan on behalf of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed of Abu Dhabi; and as a partner at GLACEX has advised on public and private sector opportunities in countries including Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and Zambia. From working in high risk environments, Sophie has developed a particular interest in de-risking strategies, and providing commercial solutions. Her diplomacy and negotiation skills are key assets.

Sophie is a Council Member and former Trustee of the Royal Society for Asian Affairs; an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society; and the Government of Uzbekistan’s Tourism Ambassador to the UK.

A popular and engaging lecturer, she has twice spoken at the Royal Geographical Society, as well as at the Royal Asiatic Society and the Global Business Forum. Sophie is the author of five books (including the first guidebook to South Sudan), and has written more than 200 articles for publications such as The Telegraph, Financial Times, Newsweek, The Spectator, City AM, and The Economist.

Sophie read Oriental languages at Clare College, Cambridge, then studied for an MA-MSc in Finance and Investment, accredited by Geneva Business School.

In addition to her native English, Sophie is fluent in Hindi, and has varying levels of competency in French, Russian, and Urdu.
